3 Reasons Summer is the Best Season
I ask most of my friends what their favorite season is and, regardless of how many time I hear their answers, if it’s not Summer I’m always surprised. I live in San Diego, one of the most beautiful cities in my opinion. You get everything here, the beach, the desert, the city AND the mountains, not to mention perfect weather 85% of the year. I understand that I’m likely totally biased because I’ve only ever lived in this kind of mediterranean climate type, even when I lived in Australia (a story for another time), BUT I do believe that even behind my obvious bias, I have some valid points for insisting that summer is the best season around… at least in Southern California.
The ocean is literally in our backyard. If you live in one of the more populated areas of Southern California, chances are you are at most a 30 minute drive from the beach. Not only that, but you have the option of going to one of the many different beaches the southwestern coast has to offer. One minute you’re hanging out at a flat, long, densely saturated shore but if you only drive 10 minutes north you could be submerged in an entirely different vibe. I love to go to La Jolla Shores or Mission Beach when I feel like meeting up with friends for a bonfire or hanging out with a canopy and a barbecue. On the other hand I prefer Sunset Cliffs in the laid back, beach town of Ocean Beach if I’m looking for a nice sunset walk and beautiful photos. If I’m going out to surf I love Black’s Beach, Moonlight Beach, Cardiff up in North County. Not to say you can’t enjoy the ocean during any other season, however to fully experience the ocean, in my opinion I prefer the water temperature to be warm.
This is where I’ve found many of my friends strongly disagree. I LOVE summer fashion (or lack-thereof). Give me a bikini, a cute sundress, a floppy hat and a pair of sandals and I’m one happy gal. I can’t deny that I am a sucker for when fall rolls around and I finally get to sweater a classic chunky sweater and my favorite pair of jeans again. I’m a big believer that less is more and a season that highlights all of your natural beauty with its sunkissed and freckles skin in all of its glory, it's my kind of season. There is something so enchanting about waking up before the sun on a Saturday (thank you daylight savings for making me feel extra productive during summer) brunching with friends, surfing all day, barbecuing at the beach for dinner and calling in a drive-in movie because it’s still warm at 8pm.
If you’re someone who loves to travel, summer is the perfect time to do just that. As a college student, it’s nearly impossible for me to go abroad any other time of the year. I can say that from the experience of being in a long distance relationship. I can’t tell you how many classes I’ve had to get excused so that I can spend time with the one person I literally NEVER get to see but wish I could see every day. Summer allows us to see each other, for the most part, as much as we want and it’s fantastic. Even for those of us who simply want to travel, the number one vacation spot for Southern Californians is Hawaii and I, for one, would rather go somewhere tropical during the summer.
I know there are great things about every season and I’ve never lived somewhere continental and had the chance to experience all 4 seasons, however from what I HAVE experienced, I can say with confidence that I’m 100% a summer bum and always will be. Spring is starting to warm this place up and I can’t wait for 80 degree days and open sunroofs.
Summer 2018, I’ve got my trusty supply of bikinis and sundresses and I’m SO ready for you.
